Day 1: Joy in Special Connections

Scripture: Luke 1:41-45

“41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

Mary and Elizabeth had a special connection…they were cousins!  They also had a special baby connection.  John, Elizabeth’s child, would have an important job given to him by God, even from the time before his birth.  His ministry would be to be a great preacher who would announce the coming of Jesus the Messiah.  Jesus, Mary’s child would be the Messiah, the one who saves His people (that’s us!) from their sins.  When those babies met in their mommy’s tummies, they flipped around inside them!  It was a special baby connection.

Later, after John had been preaching about the coming of the Messiah, they would have another special connection; John would baptize Jesus, and when he did the skies would open and the voice of God would say “This is my son in whom I am very pleased!”

God puts people in our lives for a reason, and sometimes we form very special connections. Perhaps those connections will turn into partnerships in sharing the Good News of Jesus. It is important, as we interact with family and friends to recognize that those special connections are a gift from God. They are a treasure. Do you treasure your family? How about your friends?

Often, we give “things” the attention and energy we should be giving our family and friends. We can get so wrapped up in things that can be wrapped or bought that we forget the people in our lives that mean so much.  We can get caught so up in the next level of a game, the next squishy toy to collect, or the next streak on snapchat that we don’t take time to make real connections with the people God has put in our lives.

Do your actions and words show that you have a special connection with others?  If they don’t then perhaps today is the day to tell them.  What can you do at Christmas, beyond gifts, to let someone know how special they are to you?

Prayer: God I ask you to help me show the special people in my life that I love them. Give me opportunities this week to connect with others in your name. Amen.

Activity: Be intentional today in spending time together, make a fun memory with someone in your family.

Challenge: If you have cousins, take some time to send a note to each one letting them know how much you love them!
